The principal of one of three Oyo State schools raided by kidnappers in May has described how captors beat young children into silence and killed two teachers during 56 days in captivity, in comments to reporters after her formal handover to the state government on Monday.
Rachael Alamu, principal of Community High School, Esin Ele, said the youngest abducted pupils were gagged and beaten whenever they cried or made noise, while male teachers were chained, blindfolded and endured harsher treatment throughout captivity. She said the group was forced on exhausting nighttime forest treks, sometimes lasting four hours, whenever kidnappers suspected their hideout had been discovered.
Alamu revealed the kidnappers deliberately killed two teachers to pressure the government into meeting their demands: mathematics teacher Michael Oyedokun, beheaded on the second day of captivity, and Esiyan Adegboye, 49, shot dead during the initial school invasion.
They were rescued on Friday after a joint Army-police operation backed by DSS intelligence and received medical care before being formally handed to Governor Seyi Makinde on Monday.
