The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers has suspended its indefinite strike and directed teachers to resume work today, Thursday, July 2. The union took the decision after renewed engagement with the state government and consultations with key stakeholders, following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The strike had kept public primary and secondary schools shut across the state for several weeks. The teachers’ union says it reviewed the security situation before suspending the action, while the Oyo State Government had appealed for schools to reopen, saying prolonged closure would disrupt learning and affect pupils.
The Federal Government has welcomed the suspension, describing it as a positive development. The Oyo teachers’ strike was called in protest over the kidnapping of schoolchildren and staff, and the latest move is expected to allow students return to class as security efforts continue.
