The self-styled Director-General of the disputed Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, Adeniyi Adeyemi, has been arrested in Osun State, hours after a Federal High Court judge issued a bench warrant over his repeated failure to appear for arraignment.
Justice Mohammed Umar issued the warrant Tuesday after Adeyemi missed his court date for the fifth time, rejecting arguments from his lawyer that his client stayed away out of fear for his life. “The court would help him stay alive,” the judge said, ordering security agencies to arrest him and adjourning the matter to September 30.
Osun Police Command spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi confirmed the Intelligence Response Team arrested Adeyemi in his hideout, with plans to transfer him to Abuja. Video of the arrest shows him initially declining to confirm his own name to questioning officers.
The arrest comes one day after Adeyemi insisted on Channels Television that he wasn’t hiding, only fearing for his life. He faces eight counts of conspiracy, forgery and impersonation, and could face up to 21 years in prison if convicted on the forgery-related charges.
