Argentina team could be sanctioned over post-match display

Argentina could face FIFA disciplinary sanctions after players displayed a political banner following their 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory over England in Atlanta.

During post-match celebrations, team members held up a banner stating “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”), referencing the long-standing sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands. FIFA regulations strictly prohibit political messaging during matches.

The governing body previously fined the Argentine Football Association £20,000 in 2014 for displaying an identical banner before a friendly match against Slovenia.

While Argentine Vice-President Victoria Villarruel praised the display on social media, head coach Lionel Scaloni emphasised that football and politics should remain separate as Argentina prepares for Sunday’s final match against Spain.
