Falana threatens to sue FG over judges’ FCT houses

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has renewed his threat to sue the Federal Government over newly commissioned luxury houses for judges in Abuja’s Katampe district, calling the scheme discriminatory toward other public servants.

“We have got to a stage in the country where we need to challenge the special privileges given to the rich and top public officers in the country,” he said.

Falana’s comments follow FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s July 15 commissioning of 20 residential units for FCT High Court judges, part of projects marking President Tinubu’s third anniversary in office. Falana argued the government cannot legally justify housing judges while ignoring underpaid university professors and retiring civil servants, and criticised roughly 21 governors-turned-senators who draw legislative salaries while retaining state and federal housing entitlements.

Falana first raised objections when the 40-unit Katampe project was announced in 2024, drawing a public rebuttal from Wike’s aide, who argued no arm of government operates in complete isolation from the others.

Wike says the houses, split between the FCT High Court, Federal High Court and Court of Appeal, will be allocated on an owner-occupier basis, subject to presidential approval.
