Nigeria’s youth flag football teams win gold, silver at championships

Nigeria’s youth and women’s flag football teams delivered a double continental triumph at the 2026 NFL Flag Africa Continental Championship in Nairobi, Kenya, while the men’s team added a silver medal to complete a strong overall showing.

The Under-13 co-ed team went unbeaten throughout the tournament, defeating Ghana 30-6 in Sunday’s final after routing Egypt 40-0 in group play. The senior women’s team successfully defended their African title, beating Egypt 27-18 in the final.

The Nigerian Federation of American Football (NFAF) said the results reflect years of investment in grassroots development and school-based talent programmes. Head coach Kenny Nwankwo said the U-13 title should inspire more young Nigerians to take up the sport, while women’s captain Anu Bello said the win builds confidence ahead of Nigeria’s next challenge at the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The tournament, now in its third year after editions in Nigeria and Egypt, doubles as a talent pathway toward flag football’s Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
