Over 9,000 pharmacists emigrated in 5 years, Association Says

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria says about 9,850 pharmacists have left the country in the past five years, raising fresh concerns over the impact of professional migration on Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Speaking at the association’s annual conference in Abuja, its chairman, Ambrose Ezeh, said records from the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria showed that about 9,000 pharmacists left in the four and a half years preceding December 2026. He added that more than 850 pharmacists obtained letters of good standing from the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria in the first six months of 2026.

The association has blamed poor remuneration and weak workforce planning and called for urgent government action to strengthen the pharmaceutical sector and improve medicine distribution.
