The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), on Sunday, coupled and recovered 399 fully assembled Jojef firearms alongside a critical assortment of supplementary rifle parts at the Tin Can Island Port.
This follows the Thursday, August 6 interception of a container harbouring concealed crates of knocked-down components preliminarily identified as Jojef pump-action rifles. Additional rifle parts including 80 charging handles, 39 pistol-grip screws, 57 trigger groups, four pistol grips and five barrels were also recovered among that shipment.
Following a complete assessment and inventory of the seized ammunition, Customs will prepare to hand them over to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons.
Comptroller-General, Adewale Adeniyi, had warned that criminal networks are poised to exploit Nigeria’s borders, ports and airports to move prohibited goods into the country ahead of the next general elections but assured that, together with partner agencies, the Service is intensifying its surveillance and enforcement operations to prevent such activities.
