Cameroon have won their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title after defeating Malawi three-nil in the final in Rabat, Morocco. The Indomitable Lionesses took control of the match in the first half, scoring three times to put the trophy beyond Malawi’s reach.
Forward Marie Ngah proved the hero of the night, scoring twice with two soaring headers before Naomi Eto sealed the historic win. It caps off a dramatic turnaround for the squad, who only made this year’s tournament after the field was expanded to 16 teams.
The Lionesses had failed to lift the trophy in the 2004, 2014, and 2016 finals. This year, they’ve become the fourth country to ever win the WAFCON title — Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa have rotated wins in the history of the tournament.
For Malawi, the world’s 153rd-ranked side, the defeat caps a remarkable debut campaign that included wins over defending champions Nigeria, Ghana and Algeria en route to their first-ever final appearance.
