Only 56 of 113 primary schools are functioning in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, according to the local education authority.
Education secretary Fasuma Askira says 37 schools were closed before a May 15th attack on Mussa, when suspected insurgents abducted dozens of children; 20 more schools have since shut due to insecurity.
About 80 students remain in captivity from two attacks — roughly 44 from Mussa, per the Borno State Government’s latest estimate, and 36 confirmed from a June 29th attack on a Lassa school during NECO exams, where one teacher is also still held.
As of August 31st, the Mussa children have been missing for 108 days; the Lassa students, 63 days.
