Barcelona women’s star Alexia Putellas will leave the Catalan giants at the end of her contract this summer, bringing what she called a perfect story to a close, the club announced on Tuesday. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner, aged 32, helped Barcelona claim a fourth Champions League title on Saturday as they beat Lyon in Oslo, completing a quadruple.
In a video posted on Instagram, Putellas said she has always maintained that you cannot defend this shirt halfway, and she understands that she has given everything she has, and that she wanted the final moment to come when she was at her best, giving everything with 100% energy. She said it is now time, and that it has been a perfect story.
Putellas will play her final home match as a Barcelona player against Real Sociedad on Wednesday in Liga F. She has won the Spanish top flight on ten occasions and the Champions League four times, playing a key role in Barcelona’s dominance both at home and in Europe. The midfielder started her career with Espanyol before moving to Levante in 2011 and then to Barcelona in 2012. She has been linked by Spanish media with a move to London City Lionesses, who belong to Lyon owner Michele Kang, among other sides.

In a lengthy statement, Putellas reflected on her journey, saying that at six years old, she only saw men playing in the stadium, and it would never have occurred to her that one day, in that very same place, more than ninety thousand cules would be shouting her name. She added that she and her teammates have taken the women’s team further than they could ever have imagined, and that at the beginning, being a footballer was not even recognised as a profession, but now she feels only the privilege of having been part of this change.
