Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to pursue a constitutional amendment to establish a rotational presidency if elected in 2027. He made this known on Wednesday during an appearance on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, where he reaffirmed his support for zoning as a means of ensuring fairness in leadership.
Atiku Abubakar said a constitutional provision would create a more stable and equitable system for sharing power across regions. The former Vice-President noted that the Peoples Democratic Party remains the only political party in the country with a zoning arrangement embedded in its constitution.
He also addressed the historical distribution of presidential power between the North and the South. Atiku Abubakar stated that the South has held the presidency for 18 years, while the North has held it for 10 years, raising concerns about imbalance in leadership rotation.

Reflecting on past constitutional debates, Atiku Abubakar recalled opposing a proposal by the late former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme for rotational presidency. He admitted that he later regretted the decision and now believes that constitutionalising rotational presidency remains the most equitable approach to power-sharing in Nigeria.
