Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has defended the inclusion of 10 domestic-based players—among them veteran forward Ahmed Musa—in Nigeria’s latest squad, describing the move as a deliberate step towards building a more cohesive and competitive national team.
Speaking at the Gtech Community Stadium in London, Coach Chelle explained that the call-ups were based on merit and tactical relevance, not sentiment. He said recent scouting trips across the Nigeria Premier Football League gave him confidence in the quality and potential of homegrown players.

The Unity Cup, according to the coach, is seen as an opportunity to evaluate both personnel and tactical systems ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
On Ahmed Musa’s selection, Coach Chelle highlighted the player’s experience and influence, but emphasised that performance, not reputation, will determine playing time.
He added that strengthening Nigeria’s midfield remains a central part of his long-term vision.
