An Enugu Air aircraft overran the runway while landing at Benin Airport on Thursday, with all 68 people on board safely evacuated and no injuries reported.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau said the Embraer E170, operating as Flight 4264 from Lagos, ran off the end of Runway 05 at about 3:10 pm local time. The aircraft carried 63 passengers and five crew members. NSIB’s Go Team was deployed to the scene within minutes of notification.
NSIB Director-General Alex Badeh Jr. said every runway excursion warrants a thorough, independent investigation despite the reassuring outcome, urging the public to avoid speculation while the inquiry continues. A preliminary report is expected within 30 days.
Enugu Air confirmed the incident on X, though it mistakenly described it as a “runway incursion” rather than the correct term, “excursion.” The airline warned of possible flight schedule disruptions. Presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore shared video of the aftermath, urging authorities to prioritise aviation safety.
This marks Nigeria’s second commercial runway excursion in about a year, after an Air Peace Boeing 737 skidded off the runway in Port Harcourt in July 2025.
