Computer Village traders protest LIRS tax enforcement

Traders at Lagos’ Computer Village have shut their shops in protest as a dispute with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service enters a second week. 

The Guardian reports that members of the Coalition of Associations in Computer Village, Ikeja, closed shops along Otigba Street over the weekend in solidarity with traders affected by the sealing of some plazas over tax compliance and enforcement by the LIRS. 

CACOVI’s President, Timi Famoroti, said that most traders have complied with their tax payments despite increases over the years, adding that the enforcement action has affected both traders who have complied and those who have defaulted on payments.

The group says the closures have affected the livelihoods of more than 300,000 people directly and indirectly and are calling for dialogue and swift reopening of closed plazas.
