Cost of Healthy diet rises to N1,513 per day, says NBS

NBS Projects Temporary Inflation Spike for December 2025

The National Bureau of Statistics says the average daily cost of maintaining a healthy diet in Nigeria rose to N1,513 per adult in February 2026.

According to the bureau’s latest Cost of a Healthy Diet report, the figure represents a 3.76 percent increase from N1,458 recorded in January and a 12.4 percent rise compared with February 2025. The report measures the cheapest combination of locally available foods needed to meet recommended nutritional requirements.

The NBS said the South-East recorded the highest average daily healthy diet cost at N1,889, followed by the South-West at N1,786, while the North-East remained the most affordable region at N1,160 per adult per day. Rural Borno recorded the lowest daily cost at N797.

The report attributed rising food costs to factors including high transportation expenses, insecurity in farming communities, supply chain disruptions, and inflationary pressures, which continue to affect household purchasing power across the country.
