A high court in Ebonyi State has acquitted and released 12 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who were arrested in May 2021. The development followed the withdrawal of the final charges against them by the state government.
Counsel to the detainees, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, announced their release on Thursday, stating that the Ebonyi State Director of Public Prosecution withdrew the charges in recognition of repeated court rulings in their favour.

Ejiofor noted that the 12 individuals are part of a group of 36 IPOB members who have been held since 2021. He described the latest ruling as a long-overdue respect for the rule of law and reaffirmation of their innocence.
He added that the legal team is committed to securing the release of the remaining detainees, who have also been acquitted by multiple high courts in the state.
