Dele Alake Calls For African Cooperation In Minerals Sector

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has called for stronger regional cooperation across Africa to maximise opportunities in the global solid minerals market. He made the remarks at a mining investment conference and exhibition in Kenya, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.

Mr Alake said Africa holds significant deposits of critical minerals, including lithium, cobalt, gold and copper, but continues to capture only a small share of their economic value. He noted that many countries on the continent still export raw materials while importing finished products, limiting industrial growth and job creation.

The minister urged African nations to harmonise mining policies, strengthen regional value chains, and promote cross-border infrastructure under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework. He said a unified approach would improve the continent’s bargaining power in global supply chains.

Mr Alake also highlighted the expansion of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, established in 2023, which now includes 31 member states. He said the body is working to improve cooperation, attract investment, and support value addition in the mining sector.
