Canadian rapper Drake has lost a $1.5 million bet after backing Argentina to beat Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final, reviving talk of the so-called “Drake curse.”
Drake placed the wager through crypto betting platform Stake, requiring Argentina to win within 90 minutes of regulation time for a payout exceeding $5.1 million. The bet was voided once the match reached extra time, locked at 0-0, before Spain’s Ferran Torres scored the winner in the 106th minute, securing a 1-0 victory regardless.
It’s a strikingly similar outcome to 2022, when Drake lost an identical regulation-time bet on Argentina despite the team ultimately winning that World Cup on penalties. The rapper shared his losing slip on Instagram, captioned “What’s that saying??? Better luck next time… say less.”
The loss adds to a string of recent high-profile losses, including a $1 million wager on Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback and a $1 million bet on the New England Patriots at this year’s Super Bowl.
