The Federal Government has introduced compulsory drug tests for newly admitted and returning students in secondary schools across Nigeria. The measure is part of new national guidelines aimed at tackling drug and substance abuse among adolescents.
Under the policy, all newly admitted students will undergo drug screening at the point of entry, while returning students will be tested at least once every academic session. The government says the move is intended to improve students’ mental health and academic performance.
The guidelines also prohibit students from possessing or using narcotic drugs or other banned substances without approval from school authorities. Students who test positive will undergo counselling and treatment, with repeat offenders referred for professional rehabilitation and possible temporary suspension.

The policy further directs schools to establish disciplinary committees to enforce compliance and report violent incidents linked to substance abuse to law enforcement agencies.
