Nigeria’s cargo throughput increased by 11.6 percent to 32.38 million metric tonnes in the first quarter of 2026, according to the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA.
The NPA said the growth was driven by higher import and export volumes, improved port efficiency and increased demand for terminal services. The authority also recorded a 19.5 percent rise in gross registered tonnage of ocean-going vessels to 46.75 million.
According to the agency’s Q1 operational report, outward cargo traffic rose by 23.7 percent to 14.13 million metric tonnes, while outward laden container traffic increased by 67.6 percent to more than 102,000 twenty-foot equivalent units. Vehicle throughput also rose by 67 percent to 58,870 units.
