The Federal Government has launched a $1 billion poverty reduction programme, alongside a unified database to track vulnerable households out of poverty.
Humanitarian Affairs Minister Bernard Doro unveiled the framework, called HOPE-SP, in Abuja on Wednesday. He said it shifts the government’s approach from distributing one-off aid to systematically tracking households until they exit poverty, through a — quote —“poverty graduation pathway.”
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu said the goal is to end permanent dependence on government assistance. The initiative will integrate existing databases into the National Social Register, which covers about twenty million households.
The launch comes days after Nigeria dropped twelve places, to 56th out of 60 countries ranked by GDP per capita, in a new Global Finance magazine ranking.
