The Federal Government says its new Cassava Bioethanol Project could save Nigeria over ₦3 trillion annually by reducing reliance on imported fuel and ethanol-based products.
Vice President Kashim Shettima made the announcement at the 2025 World Cassava Day celebrations in Abuja, describing the project as a key component of the administration’s drive to modernise the cassava industry.

Beyond energy savings, the Vice President said the initiative would boost agro-industrial waste management and position Nigeria as a major player in clean energy and cassava-based exports.
He also launched, via virtual link, the Semi-Autotrophic Hydroponic (SAH) system—an advanced method for producing high-quality cassava seedlings.
The Vice President noted that Nigeria is adopting best practices from countries like Ethiopia to better integrate smallholder farmers into commercial value chains and close key gaps in agricultural productivity.
