FG Unveils Fire Safety Reform to Eliminate Fake Extinguishers, Create 150,000 Jobs

The Federal Government has launched a major reform of Nigeria’s fire safety sector aimed at removing substandard fire extinguishers from circulation and creating more than 150,000 jobs for young people. The initiative, known as the Nigeria Fire Extinguisher Control programme, is being implemented by the Ministry of Interior in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji Ojo described the widespread presence of fake, expired and poorly maintained fire extinguishers as a serious risk to public safety. He said many Nigerians unknowingly rely on defective equipment that can fail during emergencies, often leading to severe consequences. The new programme is expected to introduce strict regulations to ensure that all fire extinguishers are certified, traceable and properly maintained.

The reform is also designed to transform the sector into a structured and professional industry. Authorities say it will replace informal roadside servicing with trained and certified operators across production, distribution, installation and maintenance. A digital tracking system will monitor each extinguisher from manufacture to end use, while new certification standards will enforce compliance and improve service quality nationwide.

Officials say the initiative will also boost revenue by formalising the fire safety market and closing existing loopholes. It is expected to strengthen coordination between federal and state fire services, while promoting public awareness and emergency preparedness. The government believes the reforms will improve safety standards and restore confidence in fire response equipment across the country.
