The Federal Government has outlined plans to rehabilitate 417 grazing reserves nationwide into modern livestock settlements. The aim is to reduce long-distance cattle movement, which has been blamed for recurring farmer-herder conflicts.
Livestock Development Minister Idi Maiha briefed President Tinubu on the plan Tuesday, prioritising Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Adamawa and the FCT — states with the highest history of clashes. A pilot project will begin at Wase Grazing Reserve in Plateau State.
Maiha stressed this is a gradual, incentive-based shift, not a forced ban, adding that the reserves will offer housing, schools, clinics, solar power and veterinary services, aiming to make settled ranching more attractive than nomadic herding.
The ministry says it consulted 34 pastoral organisations, including groups under the Sultan of Sokoto, with further engagement expected within two weeks.
