FG Warns of High Flood Risk in 33 States

The Federal Government has warned that more than 14,000 communities across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory face a high risk of flooding in 2026. The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during the presentation of the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook.

According to the report by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, 226 local government areas fall within high-risk zones, while 405 LGAs in 35 states are classified as moderate risk areas. The outlook also identified 923 communities in 77 LGAs across 24 states as facing minimal flood risk.

The minister said the 2026 forecast introduces a community-based flood prediction system designed to improve early warning and response. He added that the initiative will help authorities provide timely interventions in vulnerable areas.
