Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has banned the sale and consumption of alcohol in Maiduguri and nearby areas, linking it to rising criminal activities and insecurity.
Speaking at the inauguration of a committee to tackle illegal hotels, brothels, and criminal hideouts, Zulum accused both current and dismissed security personnel of encouraging radicalism, prostitution, and other antisocial behaviours.
He said some officers of the military, police, and other agencies are involved in these activities and must be held accountable, insisting there should be no sacred cows in the fight against crime.

The governor said the decision to ban alcohol followed a surge in cultism, drug abuse, thuggery, and violent clashes that have cost lives and property.
Zulum has reconstituted and empowered a committee—including the military, police, civil defence, and civilian JTF—to lead a crackdown on crime and restore peace in the state capital and its surroundings.
