India-Africa summit postponed over Ebola outbreak in DRC

The African Union and India have postponed the India-Africa Forum Summit scheduled for next week in New Delhi due to what they described as an evolving health situation linked to an Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced the decision on Thursday, saying the move was taken to ensure full participation of African leaders while taking into account the public health situation on the continent.

The postponement comes as health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo battle a growing Ebola outbreak, which the World Health Organisation says has already caused about 139 deaths and around 600 suspected cases.

Officials say efforts to contain the outbreak have been complicated by ongoing armed conflict in eastern DRC, including areas where the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group is active.
