The Lagos State Government says it will begin full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics starting July 1. The announcement comes after nearly 18 months of stakeholder engagement and transitional planning.
Tokunbo Wahab, the State Commissioner for the Environment, made the declaration via social media on Monday. He said the state had engaged producers and marketers throughout the transition period and would now move towards full implementation in line with global best practices.

In January, Lagos banned the use of Styrofoam packs, a move that sparked backlash among some traders. However, authorities have remained firm. In September, ₦5 million worth of Styrofoam products were seized and destroyed by the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Lagos Waste Management Authority.
The federal government is also playing its part. In June, it banned single-use plastics in all ministries and government agencies. The Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, said the ban is part of a broader policy to combat climate change, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss.
Plastic waste is a growing concern in Nigeria, often clogging drains, contributing to flooding, and polluting oceans. Authorities say enforcement is no longer negotiable—and call on all residents to play their part in building a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
