Lassa fever death toll rises to 191 in Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, says the death toll from Lassa fever in 2026 has risen to 191 across the country.

In its latest situation report for epidemiological week 18, covering 27 April to 3 May 2026, the agency said the case fatality rate increased to 24.6 per cent, up from 19.2 per cent recorded in the same period in 2025.

The NCDC reported 22 confirmed cases in week 18 alone, with infections recorded in Ondo, Edo and Plateau states. It said 23 states and 106 local government areas have reported confirmed cases so far this year.

The agency attributed the rising deaths to delayed treatment, poor health-seeking behaviour, weak sanitation and the high cost of care, while noting that young adults aged 21 to 30 remain the most affected group.
