Meta is on trial in Oakland, California, in what could be the most consequential of thousands of lawsuits it faces over child safety on its platforms.
Four states — California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey — accuse the company of deliberately designing addictive features and illegally collecting data from children under 13. Twenty-five more states are expected to pursue similar trials later.
States are seeking up to 1.4 trillion dollars in damages, a figure Meta calls unprecedented and says would bankrupt the company. Legal experts say such a payout is highly unlikely. This year, Meta has lost two pivotal cases over harms to children and teens and reported a rare profit decline last month, in part due to 2.4 billion dollars in legal expenses.
The tech giant has denied the allegations, pointing to safety features like teen accounts introduced since 2024.
