Niger State lawmakers say more than 600 people missing after last month’s devastating Mokwa flood are now presumed dead.
Speaking in the House of Representatives, Hon. Joshua Audu Gana and Hon. Saba Ahmed Umaru described the disaster as catastrophic, with over 4,000 homes destroyed and at least 500 confirmed deaths.

The flood, triggered by heavy rain and the collapse of an old railway embankment, also affected Edu in Kwara State. Thousands remain displaced and face rising health risks from cholera, typhoid, and malnutrition.
The House held a minute’s silence and praised President Tinubu for approving ₦2 billion in relief. Lawmakers urged NEMA and federal authorities to intensify aid efforts and protect vulnerable communities.
