Nigerian Doctor Backs Out Of Vaccine Alliance Leadership

Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, a Harvard professor who has held top health positions in Nigeria, has walked away from the top job at the Gavi global vaccine alliance.

His departure was revealed by the organisation yesterday.

In February, Gavi had announced that Dr. Pate, a medical doctor trained in internal medicine and infectious disease, would take the helm affairs on August 3, taking over from US medical epidemiologist Dr. Seth Berkley, who had been in charge since 2011.

Dr. Pate informed Gavi that he had taken what he calls an incredibly difficult decision to accept a request to return and contribute to his home country, Nigeria.

Responding, Gavi said it fully respects the decision and wishes Dr. Pate the very best for the future.

Gavi’s Chief Operating Officer, David Marlow, assumes the position of Interim Chief Executive Officer while a search for a new CEO continues.

The Gavi vaccine alliance is a non-profit organisation created in 2000 to provide an array of vaccines to developing countries.
