NollywoodWeek opens in Paris with African film showcase

The NollywoodWeek film festival has opened in Paris, showcasing Nigeria’s film industry alongside productions from across Africa and the diaspora. The five-day event began on Wednesday and features films exploring themes of love, family and duty, including documentaries and short films.

Now in its 13th edition, the festival is taking place at the L’Arlequin cinema and includes titles such as “East West Love” and “Evi Superstar”. Other featured works include “Mothers of Chibok”, which examines the 2014 abduction of schoolgirls in Nigeria, and “Batwing Unmasked: An African Superhero”.

Co-founder Serge Noukoue said the event was created in 2013 to highlight Nollywood’s global cultural impact and help reshape perceptions of African cinema. He noted growing international interest driven by streaming platforms and the popularity of African music genres.

Organisers say the festival also includes panel discussions on topics such as music rights and artificial intelligence in film, as the industry seeks to expand its reach beyond African audiences and strengthen its global presence.
