Former Nigerian Finance Minister and Sardaunan Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, has died at the age of 89. He died on Thursday at a hospital in Abuja after a prolonged illness, with the death confirmed by family sources.
Alhaji joined the Nigerian Civil Service in 1964 and rose through several senior positions, including Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Trade and Finance. He served as Minister of State for Budget and Planning before becoming Minister of Finance under the Ibrahim Babangida administration from 1990 to 1993. He later served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
Alhaji was turbaned Sardaunan Sokoto in 1990, succeeding the late Ahmadu Bello. He was widely regarded as an experienced public administrator and economist.
