Osinbajo Rejects Prosperity Gospel, Emphasises Gospel of Christ

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has dismissed the concept of the prosperity gospel, stating that it does not exist within Christian teaching. Professor Osinbajo, who is also a pastor, made this position known during a live debate at Rock of Ages Christian Assembly International, where he responded to Korede Komaiya, presiding pastor of The Master’s Place International Church.

Pastor Korede Komaiya, speaking on the debate topic, defended what he described as biblical prosperity, saying it reflects God’s will for believers when balanced with diligence, hard work, and generosity. He noted that giving, alongside personal effort and responsibility, plays a role in achieving prosperity, while cautioning against extremes or misuse of the message.

In his response, Professor Yemi Osinbajo maintained that there is only one gospel, which he identified as the gospel of Jesus Christ. The former Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice argued that framing the gospel around material wealth distorts its true meaning and undermines its spiritual foundation. He stressed that the message of Christ is not defined by financial success but by truth and righteousness.

Professor Yemi Osinbajo further stated that scripture consistently emphasises giving to the poor and upholding truth above material gain. He noted that while many may be influenced by wealth or fall into error, the core message of the gospel remains constant and will ultimately prevail, regardless of circumstances or societal pressures.
