Former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has urged young Africans to expand political action for social change beyond protests. Speaking at the ‘Technology, New Media, Citizens, and Governance Conference’ on Thursday in Lagos, Osinbajo emphasised the need for active political participation to drive lasting transformation in developing countries.

In his keynote address, titled ‘Technology as a Catalyst for Political Action in Africa,’ Osinbajo highlighted how social media has been effectively used to mobilise protests in nations like Nigeria, Kenya, and Zambia. However, he noted that protests alone cannot achieve the holistic changes needed for societal progress.

The former vice-president also called for social media platforms to self-regulate, warning that government-led regulations may be viewed as an infringement on free speech. He encouraged young people to engage directly in politics, countering the notion that staying away from governance protects one’s integrity.
