Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has conceded defeat after his ruling Fidesz party was beaten in parliamentary elections by the opposition Tisza party led by Peter Magyar. The results follow a high turnout vote held on Sunday.

With more than 97 percent of votes counted, official results showed Tisza winning 138 of 199 parliamentary seats with 53.6 percent of the vote, while Fidesz secured 55 seats. Orban confirmed he had called Magyar to congratulate him on the outcome.

In a victory speech in Budapest, Peter Magyar said the result marked a historic moment for Hungary, pledging to unite the country after 16 years of Fidesz rule. He also claimed his party’s two-thirds majority gives it a strong mandate to govern.

Orban, who has led Hungary for 16 years, told supporters the result was “painful” but accepted that governing authority had not been given to his party. The outcome is expected to reshape Hungary’s domestic and foreign policy direction, including its position within the European Union.
