Pope Leo XIV has arrived in Algeria, beginning a landmark 11-day tour of Africa that will also take him to Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea. It is the first time a pope has visited the North African country.
The United States-born pontiff landed in the capital, Algiers, on Monday morning. He is expected to meet religious leaders and visit key historical and religious sites during his stay.
The Vatican says the visit aims to promote dialogue between Christians and Muslims and highlight issues affecting the African continent, where more than a fifth of the world’s Catholics live. Algeria is a Muslim-majority country with fewer than 10,000 Catholics.

During the wider trip, Pope Leo is expected to deliver about 25 speeches across 11 days and visit 11 cities and towns, covering nearly 18,000 kilometres across the continent.
