The Nigerian Correctional Service says it has successfully enrolled 74 percent of inmates in custodial centres across the country into the National Identity Database. In a statement by Public Relations Officer Umar Abubakar, the Service dismissed reports suggesting that the National Identity Number registration had yet to commence in the facilities.
Abubakar stated that 59,786 out of 80,879 inmates have already been registered through joint efforts with the National Identity Management Commission. He stressed that mechanisms are in place to complete the enrolment of the remaining inmates, as part of broader efforts to promote rehabilitation and digital inclusion.

The Service described the media report as inaccurate and urged journalists to verify their information with the relevant authorities. It highlighted that the ongoing registration is central to the reintegration and data inclusion of all persons in custody.
Abubakar reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to full integration of inmates into national systems and cautioned against the spread of misinformation that could mislead the public and undermine institutional reforms.
