Veteran Nigerian highlife musician Mike Ejeagha has been buried in Enugu, just a day after his passing at the age of 95. Popularly known as ‘Gentleman’, Ejeagha died on Friday after a long illness.
According to his eldest son, Emmanuel Ejeagha, the swift burial was in line with the singer’s final wish to be laid to rest within 24 hours of his death, without embalming. Family members and local leaders, including Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, endorsed the decision.

The burial took place in Ejeagha’s hometown of Umuagba, Imezi-Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area. Although funeral ceremonies will be held later, the prompt burial was seen as a sign of respect for his wishes.
Ejeagha is celebrated as one of the pioneers of highlife music in Nigeria and was instrumental in promoting Igbo-language music for over 60 years. In a mark of his enduring legacy, the Enugu State Government recently renamed Obinagu Road in his honour.
