Senate Committee to Review 31 State Creation Proposals

The Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution says it will consider 31 proposals for state creation as part of ongoing efforts to amend Nigeria’s constitution. The committee, chaired by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, will conduct zonal public hearings across all six geo-political zones on July 4 and 5.

The hearings will be held in Lagos, Enugu, Ikot Ekpene, Jos, Maiduguri, and Kano. The committee says it received proposals from across the regions, including seven from the north-east, six from the north-west, and several others from the south.

The committee will also review critical constitutional issues such as local government autonomy, judicial and electoral reforms, creation of state police, gender inclusion, and fiscal restructuring. One proposal seeks to establish an independent body to oversee local government elections, while another calls for guaranteed tenure for local councils.

Other proposed amendments include enabling diaspora voting, independent candidacy, additional legislative seats for women, and formal recognition of traditional rulers. Citizens are urged to attend the hearings, as public input is vital to the constitutional amendment process.
