Senate Moves to Convene National Security Summit Amid Rising Insecurity

The Senate has resolved to establish an ad hoc committee tasked with organising a national security summit, as lawmakers grapple with Nigeria’s deepening security crisis.

The decision followed a motion tabled by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim and supported by Senators Titus Zam, Nwebonyi Onyeka Peter, and Osita Ngwu. In his presentation, Senator Ibrahim highlighted the need for fresh approaches to military engagement, including improved communication strategies and increased defence funding to reinforce professionalism within the armed forces.

While supporting urgent reforms, Senator Adamu Aliero argued for direct accountability, suggesting security chiefs be summoned for questioning rather than holding another summit.

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro countered that a summit remained vital, noting that past inaction on recommendations should not preclude new dialogue.

Following deliberations, Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to set up a committee to begin preparations for the proposed summit.
