Seven-Storey Building Collapses in Lagos Trapping Workers

Seven out of eight construction workers trapped under the rubble of a seven-storey building that collapsed at First Avenue, Banana Island, Ikoyi area of Lagos have been rescued and are receiving treatment in hospital for various degrees of injury. One person, however, still remains missing and is presumed to be trapped under the rubble.

Mr. Mukaila Sanusi, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State government, said in a statement that the building had not received official approval.

From initial accounts, he says the building collapsed as a floor was being cast.

Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, who was also on the scene to assess the situation and flag-off investigation, called for calm and told members of the public to expect more information as his ministry unravels what transpired.
