President Bola Tinubu has declined to personally receive a special envoy from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa amid growing concerns over xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants. At least 1,490 Nigerians have been evacuated from South Africa since the latest outbreak of xenophobic violence.
The delegation, led by South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, was received by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, in Abuja. The visit comes amid heightened tensions over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa.
During the meeting, Nigerian officials expressed concern over recurring attacks on foreign nationals and questioned South Africa’s response to the violence. Most recently, a Nigerian national, Ibeh Chika Simon, was killed in a July 25th operation by the South African Police Service. Another, Patrick Egwabor Chuks was shot and critically injured.
The South African delegation said it remained committed to tackling xenophobia and strengthening bilateral relations.
