Treat Insecurity as National Emergency, ACF Urges FG

The Arewa Consultative Forum says Nigeria’s worsening insecurity has escalated into a “state of war” and is calling on the federal government to treat it as a national emergency. The position was outlined in a communiqué issued after the group’s 38th Board of Trustees meeting held on Wednesday and signed by its Chairman, Bashir M. Dalhatu.

The forum said violence across the country, including insurgency, banditry and communal clashes, has become widespread and is threatening national stability. It cited recent attacks in Borno, Kaduna, Katsina and Benue states during the Easter period that left at least 16 people dead and displaced several others.

The ACF warned that the crisis has resulted in large-scale loss of lives and displacement, while also disrupting agriculture and worsening food shortages and inflation. It said insecurity is now directly affecting Nigeria’s economy and undermining development.

The group urged the government to adopt what it described as a war-time approach by prioritising security spending, mobilising resources and demonstrating stronger leadership, stressing that restoring safety is essential for national stability and growth.
