Works Minister David Umahi has given his first detailed account of the death of 26-year-old nurse Mary Habila, who died June 27 at his residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State, saying he personally spent ₦2.2 million on her treatment for a recurring illness.
Umahi said Habila, a nurse attached to his household for three years, had complained of nosebleeds before her death, and denied any foul play. He said her room was forced open after she failed to respond to her boyfriend’s calls.
Habila’s family has resisted a police-ordered autopsy on cultural grounds and scheduled her burial for today; police say the body will not be released until the procedure is carried out. Umahi said he asked the Inspector-General of Police to move the investigation to Abuja for a thorough inquiry.
The case has taken on political weight: the Allied Peoples Movement has called for Umahi’s suspension pending an independent inquiry, while Atiku Abubakar urged that Habila’s death “not be reduced to a footnote of political convenience.”
