A United Nations-backed court in the Central African Republic has begun the trial in absentia of former president François Bozizé over alleged crimes against humanity, including murder, enforced disappearances, torture and rape.
The proceedings are being held in the capital, Bangui, before the Special Criminal Court, a hybrid tribunal made up of Central African and foreign judges. Bozizé has been in exile in Guinea-Bissau since March 2023.
The court issued an international arrest warrant for Bozizé in 2024 after investigators linked him to crimes allegedly committed by his Presidential Guard in a prison and military training centre in Bossembele. Judges said there was serious evidence that could establish his criminal responsibility as a military and political leader.
Three of his former senior military officers are currently in pre-trial detention in the Central African Republic as the trial continues.
