UN Warns Israel Against Ban on Palestinian Refugee Aid Agency

The United Nations Security Council has issued a stern warning against any attempts to limit or dismantle the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, following Israel’s recent legislation banning the agency’s activities within its jurisdiction. In a rare consensus statement, the 15-member council expressed profound concern over the Israeli law, set to take effect in 90 days, which has drawn widespread international criticism.

The Council urged Israel to honor its international commitments, respecting UNRWA’s rights and facilitating unrestricted humanitarian aid across Gaza. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres underscored that banning UNRWA’s work would contravene both the U.N. Charter and international law, specifically a 1946 convention protecting U.N. operations.

In response, Israel’s Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to international law and promised to support humanitarian aid to Gaza, provided recipient organizations are free of terrorist connections.
