Use of 500lb Bomb in Gaza Cafe Strike Raises Legal Questions

The Israeli military’s strike on a crowded beachfront café in Gaza on Monday involved a 500lb US-made MK-82 bomb.

The UK’s Guardian reports that fragments from the blast site and a deep crater suggest the use of a weapon known for its wide blast radius and shrapnel spread.

Legal analysts say deploying such firepower in a civilian-rich environment may violate international law and could amount to a war crime.

Between 24 and 36 people were killed, including a child, a housewife, an artist and a filmmaker. Dozens more were injured.

The Israel Defense Forces say the strike is under review, claiming steps were taken to minimise civilian harm.

Under Geneva Convention rules, disproportionate attacks on civilians are strictly prohibited.
